Taste of 2.0 - Web 2.0 & Library 2.0 Overview

Workshop Description

What is Library 2.0 and why is it important? Loosely defined Library 2.0 describes an approach to library service that is interactive, collaborative, and driven by user needs and expectations.  Library 2.0 also calls for libraries to encourage user participation and feedback in the development and maintaining of library service. In this full-day workshop we'll explore the basics of Library 2.0. We will also explore a selection of Library 2.0 tools (Librarything, Flickr, Del.icio.us, Wiki and more) with plenty of hands-on time to practice. (source: CT State Library Workshops)

Reasons to learn about new technologies and tools

  • Your patrons, students, faculty, friends, family - tons of people are already using these new tools for collaboration and communication and fun. You might be able to help them use the tools most efficiently and effectively.
  • There are also plenty of people who aren't using these tools yet or are confused by them. You can help them explore how they might be to put these tools to use in their own lives.
  • Many 2.0 tools can help you be more productive and efficient. Take time to learn more about them to see how they might fit into your workflow.
  • Our profession continues to grow and change. Technology is here to stay and will continue to change. We all need to keep up!
  • You don't need to master everything!  Just by being aware of what these tools do, you'll be better able to decide when they might be useful.
  • Playing with new tools helps you gain confidence. You soon realize that you can tackle anything by exploring, playing and, sharing.
  • (and don't tell anyone, but it's also fun!)
