Workshop: Tools for Sharing and Collaboration 

 

Workshop date: July 30, 2012 - 9 AM to noon 

Sponsored by: Capital Region BOCES School Library Systme

 

Workshop Description:  

  • During this session you’ll have a chance to explore a variety of cloud file storage and collaboration tools, and consider which ones will work best for you. We’ll look at Google Drive, Dropbox, Box.net, Otixo, Evernote, and others that your are interested in exploring. 


Workshop Goals: 

  • Opportunity to explore a range of technology tools that interest you. 
  • Share ideas for how tools might support student learning and your own work. 
  • Explore possible collaborations with other workshop participants.
  • Have fun and PLAY!

TODAY'S TOOLS

 

Sharing Files, Simply

  • Dropbox -
    • Free acct  2 GB, Pay for more space
    • Synchronizes with apps for mobile devices, PC, Mac, Linux.
    • Stores files created elsewhere, no online editing. 
    • Refer friends for additional free space. (disclaimer - link is my own "get more space" link) 
    • Share folders with others. The folder synchronizes with their Dropbox acct.
    • Share individual files by sharing the link.   
    • Set up a SendToDropbox email address to send files directly to your DropBox account 

 

  • Box.net
    • Handy service to use for uploading and sharing documents. Multiple contributors can share content on one account. 

 

  • Google Drive
    • Create documents and invite others to collaborate. Multiple users can be editing in realtime.
    • Edits and revisions are tracked, older versions can be restored. 
    • Store sord documents, spreadsheets, slide presentations and more.
    • You can also create forms to collect feedback.
    • No storage limit on files created in Google Docs or uploaded files converted to Google Docs formats 
    • 5 GB free storage for uploaded files
    • Files can be hared in a variety of ways. Public, restricted to anyone with the link or inivtes to individuals. 
    • Docs can be embedded on other web sites. 
    • Chat boxes to discuss and comment on documents.
    • Download desktop app to synchronize with web storage. 

 

  •  Scribd
    • Upload Word, PDF files and PowerPoint docs to share with others. Documents can be embedded on your web site.

  • Slideshare
    • Upload slide presentations to share with others. Since these can be embedded on your website, you could easily share community meeting presentations, training presentations and so on.

    • Zipcast: Handy feature to run a live presentation. Invite others to attend at a specific time, run your slides and give a live audio presentation. Free!

Collaborative Spaces  

  • Mightybell
    • "Mightybell is a place to create colorful online groups with friends and like-minded people around what interests you. You can host a new space for a topic, interest, project, or passion for free in seconds. Then, you can choose a theme, make it public or invite only, and bring in your friends and people who share your interests with an easy series of invitations."  This would be a great place to run a book club, share and discuss ideas for a project, post information for your community,

    • Probably the most popular wiki tool for K12. Still offering a nice free wiki package for educators.

  • Evernote : How do I love thee, let me count the ways! This web and mobile app helps you keep track of your notes, ideas, documents, images, and more. Install the browser add-on, then highlight bits of web pages you want to save and clip directly to Evernote. Install the software and apps on every device you own and your notes will be with you everywhere. Everything is synchronized to your main account on the web.     • Write, share, collaborate. No log-ins needed. Very handy!  (an etherpad spin off)

 

  • DabbleBoard 
    • Web based whiteboard for drawing, sketching, writing, organizing ideas. Invite others to collaborate, text & video chat with collaborators. 
  • Doodle
    • Simple tool to help you find the best time for an event, meeting, party, etc. Enter dates & times, send invitation to other attendees and everyone can select the dates/times that will work best for them. 

 

Online Meetings & Conference Calls

  • Google Hangouts
    • Handy function of the Google+ platform. Set up free online meeting of up to 10 people. Audio and video is supported.  (Linda Braun has some examples of recorded hangouts publicly posted)
  • Speek
    • Free conference calls. Sign up and receive your own conference all URL. Send it to others to enter in their browser. They add their phone # and Speek calls them. Or they can connect via computer microphone.
